In their third year of entry, after improving results each year, Whittle Wonders from North Leamington School have won the UK National F1 for Schools Competition. The next step in their journey is the Global Final to be held in Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi.
The team behind this richly deserved award included: Team Manager, Thomas Bradford, 15, with fellow students Harry Birch, 16, Testing Engineer; Ryan McLaren, 15, Manufacturing Engineer and Thomas Govern, 15, Design Engineer.
The UK finals took place in Birmingham on Saturday 15 March. This marked the culmination of a season of hard work for the team, mirroring their F1 counterparts. Since September they have worked every Monday after school, most lunch times and every Saturday morning (including holidays).
F1 in Schools embraces all aspects of a real F1 team and is tremendously demanding. The competitors not only have to design a model F1 car using a 3D drawing package, they have used fluid dynamics to optimise its shape, manufactured it using CNC equipment, and finally raced it on a 20m track, where it reaches around 60mph. They have also marketed their team, including creating a team image and finding sponsors – such as Impetus Automotive.
Impetus Automotive wish them and their teacher Robert Hodge the best of luck in the Global Finals.
